Timeline
- 3 to 8 March 2000 — Voting papers delivered to electors in Christchurch City and Banks Peninsula.
- Noon Saturday 18 March — Polling by postal vote closes.
- 7pm Saturday 18 March — Preliminary results available.
- October 2001 — If amalgamation proceeds, a new Council replacing the current two Councils will be elected.

Polls of electors in Christchurch City and Banks Peninsula in March will determine whether the two areas will amalgamate. Voting papers will be delivered by post between Friday 3 March and Wednesday 8 March.
Polling by postal vote closes at 12 noon, Saturday 18 March, and preliminary results will be available at 7pm.
