What Next?

If in March more than half the electors in each area who vote say "yes" to amalgamation, a new Council would be elected at the next triennial elections, in October 2001. It would comprise 25 councillors and a mayor.

The Local Government Commission says the membership structure of the Council and provision for eight community boards would ensure effective representation for all.

Community boards are currently a strong feature of both Councils' democratic representation and this would continue under a new Council.

See the map of the Proposed Christchurch City The existing City boards would remain: Burwood-Pegasus; Fendalton-Waimairi; Hagley- Ferrymead; Riccarton-Wigram; Spreydon- Heathcote; Shirley-Papanui. And there would be two new boards: : one in Akaroa (Akaroa- Wairewa) and one in Lyttelton covering Lyttelton Harbour Basin. See the map for clarification.

Christchurch community boards presently deal with issues in their communities and are responsible for local facilities and decision- making. They have significant power delegated by the Council for roads, parks and other facilities along with a discretionary sum of $300,000 each year to fund local projects.
