SummerTimes festival completes summer in Christchurch

Summer in Christchurch would not be complete without the City Council’s SummerTimes programme. Now in its 23rd year, the city-wide event has more than 25 events, all free.

It kicks off on 31 December with the Anthony Harper Lawyers New Year’s Eve Party and runs until 26 March.

The countdown to the New Year’s Eve bash takes place in Cathedral Square and promises to rock Christchurch into 2006. Entertainment this year will be provided by the Bubblemen and the Beat Girls. And, for the first time, a lone piper will accompany The Beat Girls for Auld Lang Syne after the New Year bursts into life with a fireworks display.

Another big event to look out for on this year’s programme is ASB Starry Nights, one of the largest stage-show spectaculars in New Zealand. The all-singing, all-dancing cast of hundreds from Showbiz Christchurch will perform with the Christchurch Symphony on stage for one night only. Hits from shows such as Hello Dolly, Hairspray and Phantom of the Opera will feature.

And SummerTimes wouldn’t be complete without family favourite the Rick Armstrong Motors Classical Sparks. This year the Hagley Park event consists of fire, and lots of it — fire poi, fire effects, fireworks, cannons and the orchestra at full strength.

Aimed at whole family, these three events all fall on Saturday evenings. So pack a picnic, grab some blankets and head out for a free evening’s entertainment.
