Local events are a highlight
Smaller, localised community events are becoming an important part of the SummerTimes experience, as this year’s programme shows.
Throughout January, February and March, there are more than 15 local events, ranging from Outdoor Movies in the Park, to Family Fishing Day though to a Tai Chi “have a go” day.
One event, the Avice Hill Arts and Crafts Fair (supported by the Fendalton/Waimairi Community Board), promises to provide families with an excellent afternoon’s entertainment.
The fair will have free have-a-go workshops, including Oamaru stone carving, jewellery making, kite building and raku pot firing. There will also be live jazz in the surrounds of the Avice Hill Reserve.
To celebrate the diverse range of cultures that call Christchurch home, there will be the Culture Galore festival at Ray Blank Park. Families are encouraged to come and experience cultural performances and demonstrations, ethnic foods, arts and crafts and loads of fun activities from over 50 different ethnic groups.
This event is supported by the Riccarton/Wigram and Fendalton/Waimairi community boards.
Another fantastic way to experience cultural diversity in Christchurch during this year’s SummerTimes is to get a team together for the Christchurch Ethnic Soccer Festival, now in its third year. The world’s most popular game drew 24 teams and enthusiastic crowds for last year’s competition.
Other local events on the calendar this summer include Beach Blast, Brooklands Summer Gala, Innercity East Multicultural Festival, Edmonds Garden Party, Bottle Lake Forest Family Orienteering Day, Garden Gala, Barrington Big Fun, Showcase Halswell, Tai Chi Have a Go Day, Outdoor Movies in the Parks, Family Fishing Day, Linwood Youth Festival Experience and the Waltham Community Urban Fair.
Family Fishing Day: 11 March at 2pm, Owles Terrace opposite Hardy Street.
Culture Galore: 18 March, Ray Blank Park on Maidstone Road.
