Canvas, fur, flying: all on for children

With the school holidays fast approaching, it’s time to pull out the calendar and mark in several events from the SummerTimes programme aimed at the kids, but guaranteed to be fun for the whole family.

For starters, there’s the Great Kids Campout. This activity was popular last year, and it’s on again, overnight, all over Christchurch. A novel experience for all the family — camping out in the city’s backyards.

The Council and Guides Canterbury present this evening of camping, games, crafts and sing-alongs around the campfire before a hot cup of chocolate and then it’s curl up under the canvas till morning. Please note that it is essential to book for this event.

Then, there’s the old favourite, the McDonalds Teddy Bears’ Picnic — one of Christchurch’s most-adored events. Pack a picnic and bring a favourite furry friend, two if you can’t pick, and join thousands of other bear owners on this great day out in the park where there will be fun, food, rides, entertainment, music and special guests. What a great day to be a bear.

From bears to kites, next up is The Press Kite Day. Last year, there were thousands of kites launched on New Brighton beach, one spot in Christchurch you can count on for a good summer breeze. Bring togs, lunch and kites if you have them. If you don’t, don’t worry, because the Kite Shop will be there to help out.

At Kite Day you will marvel at some of the world’s best kite flyers, including team flying and mega-kites.

  • These events are just a slice of what’s in store for children this summer. For all other events, look out for the SummerTimes brochure.
