Summer theatre, superior bands

The idyllic setting of the Botanic Gardens’ daffodil lawn is the venue for this year’s Anthony Harper Lawyers Summer Theatre production of Cyrano De Bergerac, while another SummerTimes favourite, Sunday Bandstand, will run throughout the summer months.

Cyrano De Bergerac, presented by The Clinic, adapted from the Anthony Burgess translation and written by Edmond Rostand, centres around Cyrano, a soldier and poet who is doubly afflicted by the belief his large nose makes him too ugly to profess his love to Roxanne. Instead, he pens love letters for another of her suitors.

Bring a picnic, a blanket or chairs, and relax as this classic comedy plot carries you away.

And if you’re keen on other relaxed outdoor entertainment, get along to Sunday Bandstand, a charming interlude on summer Sunday afternoons. Enjoy brass or pipe band music played live in some of Christchurch’s most beautiful surroundings, including the Weather Station by the children’s playground at the Botanic Gardens, Latimer Square, Halswell Quarry and Scarborough Park in Sumner.

  • Summer Theatre performances will take place at 7pm, with weekend matinees at 2pm. There will be no performances on Mondays. For more information about Sunday Bandstand, pick up a copy of the SummerTimes brochure
