Migration marks SummerTimes’ end

They say “all good things must come to an end” and the SummerTimes festival will officially wave farewell when the bar-tailed godwits lift off for their migration back to the Arctic Circle sometime in March.

The Christchurch City Council Rangers, in association with the Avon-Heathcote Estuary Ihutai Trust, present this unique and very special event to mark the end of summer, and SummerTimes, in Christchurch.

The godwits.

In September godwits travel more than 11,000km to spend the southern summer on the estuary and over the months rebuild their bodies for the migration back to their Alaskan breeding grounds and the brief northern summer.

Each September, Christchurch celebrates their arrival with the Christ Church Cathedral bells ringing. Towards the end of March there will be a brief but moving ceremony which will provide you with an opportunity to observe the godwits in their natural environment before their departure.
