Central city shops in focus

Open All Hours, an exhibition by Christchurch photographer Garry Bull, is now on display at Our City O-Tautahi, the Council's community exhibition space on the corner of Oxford Tce and Worcester Blvd.

Mr Bull has captured an eclectic mix of Christchurch's central city shops -- from the chic and eccentric to the bizarre and kinky. Owners are depicted centre-stage with their shop's wares.

"The collection of photographs is a celebration of creativity within the central city," Mr Bull says.

He spent the last 18 months taking photographs in the central city and felt it was important to record these stores and their owners as a historical document so future generations can see the unique nature of Christchurch's central city shops.

  • Open All Hours runs until 24 June. Admission to Our City O-Tautahi is free. It is open 10am-4pm, Monday to Saturday.

A moment in time: Garry Bull's portrait of Craig Meadowcroft at Antiquus exemplifies the ever-changing face of retail. Since August, 170 High Street has been home to women's fashion shoe store d'Orsay, while Mr Meadowcroft's enterprise, now called Lime Tree Antiques, has moved to the main Akaroa highway near Little River.
