Arbor Day update

For Arbor Day this year, in a bid to find out Christchurch's three favourite trees, the Council wanted to hear your personal stories about trees and for you to cast a vote for a favourite.

Voting, which proved very successful, has now closed. By visiting www.ccc.govt.nz/arborday you will be able to view the winning trees in Christchurch the Garden City.

Every year, Arbor Day is held in New Zealand to draw attention to the importance of trees. In the lead-up to the 5 June commemoration, this year the Council held several events, including a tree workshop, public tree plantings, guided tree walks and a Science in the City Lecture.

Since 1977, New Zealand has celebrated Arbor Day on 5 June, which is also World Environmental Day.

For many years, an Arbor Day garden has also existed at Victoria Park on the Port Hills to permanently mark Arbor Day's significance.

What follows is a small selection of votes and explanations received for Christchurch's favourite tree.

What's your favourite tree? The lancewood. Why? As it grows it changes from a skinny kid to a confused teenager and finally to a stout adult. Each stage is intriguing in its own right.

What's your favourite tree? The willow. Why? It looks sad and droopy, yet also romantic.

What's your favourite tree? The cabbage tree. Why? It is such an iconic New Zealand tree and the silhouette of a mature cabbage tree against an evening sky gives me a true feeling of home.
