Pier Lighting Event
Thursday 21 June 2006
Good evening. I am delighted to be here tonight to take part in the illumination of the pier.
The pier is one of the city’s show stoppers. It’s a drawcard for people to visit Brighton. Like most good ideas the initiative to build the pier came from the community, and it’s fitting that the inspiration to light the pier also came from a local person, Doctor John Cook. Many thanks to John, on behalf of the city, for coming up with this proposal to light the pillars of the pier to make it a feature at night.
The lighting of the Pier is a fine example of community participation in getting things done. The Council’s Art in Public Spaces Working Party, the Community Board’s Artworks in Burwood/Pegasus Working Party and the Pier and Foreshore Society all played a significant part in having this lighting installed.
Grant Robertson, of Lite Site, is to be congratulated for his design and installation of the LED lights which will have a dramatic effect on the pier by night.
Congratulations to everyone involved in this illumination project which will help to promote Brighton as a destination and the Pier by night. The lighting is an attractive vibrant work of art everybody can enjoy.
Without further ado, and to quote from the book of Genesis,
“Let there be light”.
