Armistice Day Speech - Year of the Veteran

Saturday 11 November 2006

Good Morning. We are gathered here today to commemorate Armistice Day a day of national remembrance that marks the end of World War 1 when the armistice was signed between the Allies and the Germans on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month. It is especially pleasing to see a number of military veterans, those who have risked their lives for our freedom have our respect and gratitude.

This year has been designated the Year of the Veteran by Government. Part of the city’s commemoration was the wonderful exhibition at Our City featuring the involvement of New Zealander’s at Gallipoli.

2006 is also the 90th Anniversary of the Returned Services Association. The RSA is one of New Zealand’s iconic organisations that looks after the welfare of our service men and women both past and present.

It is occasions like that that we take time to remember those men and women who did not come back. They showed constancy and courage in battle and paid the ultimate price.

It is also a time to rejoice and salute those who did come back and brought the world a great victory. Armed and unarmed men and women fought and endured for our independence.
