2006 World Singles Champion of Champions

Friday 24 November 2006

Good Evening. A warm welcome to Christchurch to all those from around the world who are taking part in the 2006 World Singles Champion of Champions. will find some time to look around our Garden City.

This event, on the superb Fendalton Bowling Club greens, is one of a series of high profile national and international events that will bring top class bowls to the Garden City over a three year period, which will reach a grand finale when Christchurch hosts the prestigious World Championships in 2008.

Christchurch City Council is proud to be associated with these events through staff support and funding.

This is a unique opportunity to raise the profile of bowls in Christchurch and New Zealand. It will enable bowlers from around the country as well as local sports fans to watch, first hand, the top bowlers from around the world.

I understand that around 90,000 New Zealanders play bowls, this must make it one of New Zealand's most popular sports. Best of all it’s a sport that can be played by all ages. There’s a level playing field because, although the young have the energy and sharp eyesight, the older players have the experience and the sharp insight.

I would like to pay a tribute to all the 250 volunteers involved in making this event a success. My thanks to Bowls Events New Zealand and the Fendalton Bowling club for your hospitality this evening and I wish you all the best for an exciting tournament.
