Launch of Fire-Fighter Games Book and Exhibition
Friday 2 May 2003
(Launch book (Journey the Story of the Steel) and exhibition/plus
thank Fire-fighters who went to Australia this year)…
Have to
start tonight by noting again who the public respect. When you
look at the public esteem ratings for professions
you find Fire-fighters right at the top. For some odd reason
politicians do not poll so well.
So we are here today to pay respect
to those the public respect. Lots.
We also have another public
opportunity to reflect on our great good fortune in being one
of a very few cities allowed
to put on a permanent show of respect to the heroes of 9/11 and
other Fire-fighters everywhere with our unique sculpture at the
Fire-fighters Reserve.
I’ll make the point again that this wonderful sculpture
is to remind us all what lengths Fire-fighter’s everywhere
are willing to go to save lives. Up to and including the supreme
sacrifice on their part.
This sculpture has become part of the emotional
landscape of Christchurch. A place where most reflect on courage,
commitment
and the high price we all pay when peace is not given a chance.
This
new book “Journey- The Story of the Steel” helps
underscore just how special and precious the process behind this
sculpture has been.
It is another lasting reminder of what is a
fascinating story in how we are evolving as a city that both
cherishes peace
and respects courage.
I am delighted to be able to help launch this
book.
It is also a fitting event to publicly thank those of
you who have taken part in helping Australia fight their horrific
fires this year.
It is another level of Fire-fighting that from
what the rest of us see on television, I hope has given you levels
of expertise
we never have to apply here.
It has looked completely terrifying.
And that’s
on TV.
It is another testament to the bravery and commitment
of our Fire-fighters that you were able to play such a brave
role in helping out the neighbours with their massive fires.
We
don’t seem to get the same demand for emergency
shipments of politicians.
