Youth Volunteers celebrated

Garry Moore with Marijke Freeman-Moir, a telephone counsellor for Youthline Central South Island. The group says Marijke is an inspiration and an excellent role model to other young people.	The young women of Weave with the Mayor. This group's aim is to inspire peace and empower young people. Their school workshops with Year 10 pupils deal with topics like power, inequality, human rights and access to resources.

The Mayor presented 23 Youth Volunteer Awards on 5 December to young people aged from 12 to 25 years who have made an extraordinary contribution to their community.

Volunteering Canterbury manager Ruth Gardner says this year's awards showd an amazing range of voluntary roles. "Several serve on boards of trustees, while others act in videos, organise festivals and judge gymnastics competitions," Ruth says. "A common thread is that many of these young people give countless hours of their precious free time to help other young people and provide positive role models.”

The ceremony, hosted by Volunteering Canterbury with Te Runanga ki Otautahi o Ngai Tahu at the Christchurch Netball Centre in South Hagley Park, also featured Cashmere High School’s Dead Saxy musical group and Common Ground breakdancers.
