Engineering book on reprint A 330-page book on the history of municipal engineering in Christchurch has been reprinted by the Council. In a new foreword, Strategy and Resources Committee chairman Cr David Close says the book is a concise, strictly factual narrative with generous quotations from contemporary reports with more than 70 pages of appendices for readers interested in the detail. He says that the compilers — Jane Donaldson, now the manager of the Council’s Environmental Unit, and a former Council engineer, John Ince, "refrain from expressing opinions or drawing conclusions. However, for the reader, there are plenty of conclusions to be drawn." He suggests that engineers are the unsung heroes chiefly responsible for providing "personal convenience and mobility, civic amenity, public health and economic infrastructure." The book was first published in 1980. |
