VOTE! - local election on 13 October A vote in the local government elections on 13 October is a statement on the performance of local politicians. Anyone over 18 years of age can vote as long as they have enrolled as a parliamentary elector. The local elections are held every three years and voters will receive voting papers in the mail between 21-26 September. Voting should be treated wisely because everyone’s vote is essential to the wellbeing of individuals, the neighbourhood, the city and the greater Canterbury area. The City Council hopes as many electors as possible will vote using the postal voting system. An innovation this year is that voting papers are being issued three weeks before the election day, rather than the two weeks as in previous elections. Also, for the first time, a booklet will be sent out with voting papers containing photographs and profiles of candidates. Besides voting for the Mayor, City Councillors, and members of Community Boards, voting will also take place for members of the Canterbury District Health Board and the Canterbury Regional Council. Inside are details of how to vote and other essential information regarding the triennial election.
