Variety of heritage events
More than 100 events, between 12-19 October, will offer something for everyone. The full week of activities will have its focus on the city’s heritage buildings and artefacts. The theme will be "Our Treasures — O Matou Taonga" and this will be introduced in a public address by the Chief Executive of Te Papa-Museum of New Zealand, Dame Cheryll Sotheran, at 5.30pm on Friday 12 October in the Stone Chamber of the Canterbury Provincial Council Buildings. The week is intended to increase awareness of the broad sweep of historical development of the city, as well as individual heritage buildings, art works and sites. This year is the 150th year of organised European settlement and, as a number of organisations will be celebrating their sesquicentenary, many activities of the week will be based around this. Foremost will the 150th anniversary of the founding of the "Mother Church" of the Canterbury settlement, the parish of St Michael and All Angels. The week will again feature Old Syd’nham Town with story telling by Margaret Copland. Sydenham is just one community that is providing historic guided walks of their neighbourhood. The programme will provide many other opportunities to visit some of the city’s historic homes, churches and other significant buildings. The City Council is core funding the week, with additional sponsorship from the Carter Group and the Community Trust. The week’s programme will be available from City Council libraries and service centres and the Arts Centre from the beginning of next month. For further information: Paul Collins on 355 7794. |
