Parking on all sides

Linwood Library, in Cranley Street, will have big car parks as neighbours on two sides Linwood Library in Cranley Street will soon be surrounded by a massive car park and it could mean more customers.

The Warehouse is erecting a large store near Eastgate Mall and hundreds of car parks are being installed around it. When the development is completed more than 1000 new car parks will have been provided.

This has meant repercussions for Linwood Library. Cranley Street, which runs in front of the building, is stopped as it joins a car parking area. Cranley Street used to join Russell Street in the east. However, Cranley Street will now have a feeder street east of the library to Chelsea Street.

It is ironic that before the present library was built in 1993 discussions were held that it be built near Russell Street. However, it was felt that the library would be surrounded by other developments and a land swap occurred meaning the library was built in Cranley Street. Now it will be surrounded on two sides by car parking. On its west side is the Linwood medical centre and pharmacy on Linwood Avenue.

It is expected that the changes will lessen the volume of traffic in front of the library and the mall developments - along with extra car parking - will bring in more customers. The northeast area librarian, Barbara Clarke, says the Eastgate Mall management has kept all neighbours up to date with building progress.
