Heritage award contenders sought

The conservation- restoration heritage award winner last year was 'Mother Hubbard' in Redcliffs. Entries are being sought for HagleyFerrymead Community Board’s heritage awards.

They were established to recognise the efforts of the community initiatives taken to preserve the built or constructed character and heritage of the area.

Awards are made in six categories:
  • Retention - A building previously under threat of demolition but is now secured for the future by either private or community initiative.
  • Conservation-restoration - Items must have undergone a conservation and-or restoration programme within the past year or be part of a stage conservation and-or restoration programme.
  • Education and awareness - Initiatives undertaken by individuals or community groups to promote heritage education and awareness.
  • Children - Aimed at raising the heritage awareness of the young and encouraging them to be proactive within their local environment.
  • Good caretaker - To recognise property owners who have maintained properties in original or near original condition for some years.
  • Christchurch Star Award - Recognises efforts by businesses and retailers in the City Centre to preserve or maintain a heritage building.
Anyone can enter, says Cindy Breward at Linwood Service Centre. People who have seen something they feel deserves to be nominated for an award can let her know about it.

Entries will close on Friday 8 September and nominations must be in the Hagley or Ferrymead wards. Entries should contain the address, photographs and written information about the project and must be suitable for display. Also needed is the name and address of the owner, community group, school, institution or company responsible for the project.

Cindy Breward says it is envisaged that the awards will foster a greater awareness of the built heritage significance of the area.

Winners receive trophies, kept for a year, and certificates. Runners-up receive certificates.
