Avebury House gets a facelift

Avebury House in Evelyn Couzins Avenue, Richmond . . . up to $350,000 will be spent on its refurbishment. Work is being carried out on Avebury House in Evelyn Couzins Avenue, Richmond, to prepare it for community use.

Up to $350,000 will be spent on the refurbishment of the house, which is now in the administrative hands of Hagley- Ferrymead Community Board.

A community activity plan is being developed for the use of the house.
The exterior has already been painted and parts of the roof have been replaced. The two- storey Victorian house was built for the Flesher family in 1885.

In 1945 the Government bought part of the land but in 1948 Christchurch City Council bought the land and house.
The Council established Avebury Park and in 1965 the house became the Cora Wilding Youth Hostel.
It remained a hostel until 1997.
