Linwood Youth to Show Wares

The ahurangi maori group as hit last year's LYFE Young Linwood people believe in blowing their own trumpets - and to prove it they will be holding another LYFE (Linwood Youth Festival Experience).

LYFE is a celebration of youth pride, diversity and achievements in Linwood. That does not mean only Linwood residents can attend.

Young Linwood people will celebrate what is good in their community. LYFE will promote everything uniquely Linwood.

The first festival was held because of a negative image and youth decided to do something about it.

This year's festival will be held at Linwood Park in the Spring (the date has yet to be fixed) and the third festival will feature local bands, a skateboarding competition, a break-dancing challenge, along with food stalls and displays by local groups. As well, there will be a good mix of local visual and performing artists, cultural groups, sports demonstrations and competitions.

The four-hour festival will focus on youth, families and friends with a suburban-fair atmosphere.

It also aims to develop pride and build strong, positive relationships between the youth of Linwood and the community by featuring local youth achievements and providing opportunities for sharing information.

Planning for a crowd of several thousands is continuing and the organisers say they will welcome any groups that wish to take part and they are looking for people to help with the planning. Organisers, many of them young people, are also looking for sponsors.

A graffiti artist shows his skills at the 1998 festival. Hagley-Ferrymead Community Board members, Christchurch City Council community recreation co-ordinators, school principals, church representatives, cultural groups, and students support LYFE.
