Cave Rock to see big upgrade
The first stage will start soon on improvements to a beach access from the Esplanade. These will include improvements to a public pier next to the On The Beach restaurant and upgraded steps to the beach. Wide timber steps to the beach will replace the existing stone steps that are unsafe and inadequate. A timber extension to the pier, beside the restaurant, will provide additional pedestrian access to the beach. A stone platform between the steps and Cave Rock will ease transition between the two materials and provide an alternative seating area. The materials will tie in with those existing and those proposed for the Cave Rock Reserve. Consultations with residents have been held over 18 months and the concept plan allows for the closing of the road to the Esplanade area and a raised circular park. The raised park will give views to the sea. Steps up to the Boer War Memorial Fountain will be part of the redeveloped reserve. Four picnic tables, seats, and planting and sculptures will also be provided. It is possible that in the future a toilet-changing rooms-drinking fountain will be built. Wind protection will be provided along with new paving, walls and steps. This plan of the proposed redevelopment of the the Cave Rock surrounds at Sumner is by landscape architects Studio 33.
