Romantic concert for festival Bic Runga, whose debut album Drive is the biggest selling album in New Zealand by a New Zealander, will open the Singapore Airlines Festival of Romance 2000. She will perform "beguiling and unique" songs in the Arts Centre Market Square at 9.30pm on Saturday 5 February. Like many of the festival events, the concert will be free (it is sponsored by Christchurch Casino). On the same night, 8pm in the Arts Centre North Quad, Malcolm McNeill will lead performers Janice Bateman, Jillian Bartram, Peter Hewson and others in a tribute to composer Burt Bacharach, as well as performing songs from the 60s and 70s. This concert, supported by The Community Trust, is also free. Another highlight of the festival, which runs to 14 February in Christchurch, is Cal Wilson and Andie Spago presenting crazy Kiwi comedy (10, 11 and 12 February in the Arts Centre Great Hall) while Pacific Underground romance the guitar. There will be dance, jazz, films, opera, cultural performances and, in the Court Theatre courtyard on 12 and 13 February, a trapeze children’s show. Festival programmes are available.
