Ways to Solve Traffic Congestion Outside Schools

St Margaret's PupilsFollowing consultation with parents and pupils at St Margarets, students at the school decided they needed to answer the question ‘how can we help reduce congestion outside schools?’

St Margarets observed, analysed and surveyed five other local schools to build up a more detailed picture of the problem. Council and other community experts were also consulted to help identify solutions.

The ‘big idea’ which developed was a strategy involving six specific plans. It included redesigning the school’s entrance, co-ordinating bus routes, car pooling, a revised plan for student parking and ways to encourage alternative transport to school.

The Council’s city streets unit has agreed to follow through on the redesign for St Margarets’ entrance and all pupils at the school received a leaflet entitled ‘Way to Go’ explaining alternative options to driving to school as part of an educational programme.
