Soccer’s rising stars on way


Next month the focus of the football world will be on Queen Elizabeth II Stadium, where the FIFA Under 17 World Championship comes to Christchurch.

The 12 to 24 November event is said by organisers to be worth $8 million to $10 million to the City and the estimated television audience is predicted to comprise more than 270 million viewers.

There will be eight matches in Christchurch with world champions Brazil, New Zealand’s traditional rivals Australia, highly skilled Mali and top Europeans Germany playing (New Zealand is playing in Auckland).

The games will be on the 12th (Show Day), 14th, 17th, 21st (quarter final) and 24st (semi final). Tickets are $12 a day for adults; $20 for the semi- final. It costs nothing for a child accompanied by an adult; $5 for an unaccompanied child.
