Heritage Week — celebrating our City’s past

Heritage Week, from 15 to 22 October Carter Group Heritage Week, from 15 to 22 October, offers a fascinating insight into Christchurch's past and present.

This year's theme is Cultural Landscapes: Evolution of a River City. The 100-plus events include parades, lectures and talks, exhibitions, tours and open days and community and riverside walks.

Highlights include a one-day seminar, with leading Australian heritage conservationist Dr Jim Kerr as keynote speaker.

For a night of over-the-top fun, landscape architectshape up to architects to debate the topic: Sink or Swim? That architects rescued Christchurch from the Swamp.

Sport historian Greg Ryan reveals that the current debate among rugby and cricket administrators over access to Jade Stadium is nothing new. In his lecture Contested Grounds, Tepid Baths and Metaphorical Boundaries, he explains why issues of access to sporting space have always been hotly debated.

Richard Greenaway continues his eerie Spirited Cemetery Tours of five Christchurch graveyards.

  • Details of all Heritage Week events were included in the programme delivered to Christchurch homes at the end of last month. Copies are also available at Civic Offices (Tuam Street), service centres and libraries.
