Wheelie big games!


The World Wheelchair Games 1999 are currently on in Christchurch, providing elite wheelchair athletes with competition in a wide range of sports and giving them the opportunity to qualify for the Sydney Paralympics next year.

The programme also includes some international track and field events for amputee and celebral palsied athletes.

Forty countries and about 900 athletes and support staff are participating. Sports include fencing, rugby, swimming, hand- cycling and power lifting. Local talent includes Ben Lucas (track and marathon), Colin Willis (rifle shooting), Matthew Slade (track), Neroli Fairhall (archery) and Hadleigh Pearson (swimming).

The track and field and swimming are being held at QEII; rugby and twinball at Cowles Stadium; and other events at venues around the City.
