Fostering good-looking streets and gardens

The Street and Garden Awards scheme, a joint Council and Christchurch Beautifying Association project, aims to foster community pride and encourage residents to maintain attractive garden and street frontages.
Ferry Road has been added to the "gateways" classification in the Street and Garden Awardscheme, a joint Council and Christchurch Beautifying Association project.

It has been added in recognition of the number of visitors who arrive on cruise ships in Lyttelton Harbour.

The scheme has been in existence for almost 50 years to foster community pride and encourage residents to maintain attractive garden and street frontages and footpath berms.

Judging of this year’s awards will be done in the first couple of weeks of February and prizewinners will be announced on Thursday, 15 February.

Awards are issued for the most attractive streets and cul-de-sacs in each of the six Community Board areas, and under the Community Pride Garden Awardsection, awards are issued for the most attractive gardens viewed from the street in each board area.

There are awards for the city’s premier long street, premier short street and premier cul-de-sac; an award for the most attractive garden among the premier streets; for the most attractive three or more adjoining street frontages, and awards for the most attractive gardens as viewed from the street in each of the city’s "gateways" — Memorial Avenue, Main North Road, Main South Road and Yaldhurst Road.
