Disease threat to Park Terrace willows

Willow-lined Park Terrace — attack by a native fungus could change the character of the riverbank.

A recent survey by Council arborists of the trees along this corridor has identified the presence of a fungal disease that could affect the viability of maintaining the willow-edged character.

The disease is a native fungus that attacks the roots of trees, effectively killing and rotting tissue below ground level.

Of the willows on the Park Terrace side of the Avon, most are in danger of being infected by the disease, despite control measures by the Council.

However, there are other large deciduous trees that are resistant to Armilariand could form the basis of new plantings.

The Council will also invite comment on other riverbank issues including maintenance, low level planting and access to the riverside.

As part of the consultation, the unit intends to hold a public walkabout along Park Terrace to explain the problems in more detail.

Temporary noticeboards will been installed near the Armagh and Carlton Mill bridges outlining the issues and providing information about proposals.
