Performers from various Maori groups were among the first to appear in the show.

One of the highlights to date of celebrations marking Christchurch and Canterbury’s 150th anniversary was the Son et Lumiere "Turning Point — i mua: a muri" in Cathedral Square.

Phil Garland from Bush Telegraph entertained the crowd with folk songs in the lead-up.

And performers from various Maori groups, led by Teari Brennan (below), were among the first to appear in the sound, light, performance and fireworks show, which told the story of the region’s history.

Big events still to come are the opening of the Sister Cities’ Gardens on 17 February (see page 5); the Civic Music Council festival (page 8); the installation and lighting ceremony for the sculpture Chalice in Cathedral Square and the launch of the book "Rural Canterbury: Celebrating its History".

Anniversary mementos are still available from Turning Point 2000, including the Canterbury passport, a commemorative coin and books.
