Kerbside and beyond

Kerbside recycling is popping up beyond the kerb this summer.

The huge success of the three- year programme has encouraged its growth into recreation areas.

The first of this is at SummerTimes events.Watch out for the kerbside/Onyx recycling bins, separate your glass and plastic into either clear or coloured and place them, and any aluminium cans, into the correct sections of the bins as you head home.

The idea is for recycling to be possible at events and permanent public venues, and to encourage people by showing them how easy it is to recycle at home and when out.
Rubbish Bag Coupon Scheme

Coupons instead of the familiar black rubbish bags will be delivered to all ratepayers from April.

The coupons are to be taken to supermarkets to exchange for 52 rubbish bags.

This system will replace the delivery of bags to houses. Coupons will be sent directly to ratepayers and should be redeemed at supermarkets by June.

The problems of incorrectly delivered bags, stolen bags and fraud have prompted the new scheme.

Several methods have been tried before to reduce these problems, with mixed success.

The new system should mean lower levels of fraud and theft, and will cost less to administer than the present system.
