Work now under way on Belfast-to-city pipeline

Work has started on stages two and three of the Belfast-to-city sewer pipeline, which is being constructed from Belfast to Frosts Road where it will connect with the city’s wastewater system.

Stage two of the construction is between Frosts Road and Bottle Lake Plantation. Work through a section of Travis Wetland starts this month and is likely to be completed by September. The pipe will be laid along the walkway which, for safety reasons, will be closed during construction.

“Some plants will be temporarily relocated and several trees may have to be removed,” says John Skilton, Travis Wetland Ranger. “But once the pipe is laid, some of the original plants will be reinstated and new planting established. This will enhance the walkway and make the area easier to maintain.”

Stage three, from Lower Styx Road to Tyrone Street, Belfast, has started in the Styx Reserve and is expected to reach Marshlands Road this month.

“We’ll be using technology which will thrust, or push, the pipe under Marshlands Road which should mean little disruption to road users, “ says Brendon Russ, Council’s Contracts Engineer.

Originally scheduled for 2009, the work has been brought forward partly due to the accelerated increase in development in and around Belfast. The first stage, on private land from Lower Styx Road to Bottle Lake Forest, was completed in December last year while the area was being subdivided. The Belfast pumping station will also be upgraded as part of this project, which is scheduled for completion in June 2006.
