Wheelbarrow volunteers needed

The Hei Hei/ Broomfield Community Wheelbarrow, a project supported by the Council’s Riccarton/Wigram Community Board and run by volunteers, is in need of helpers.

The “wheelbarrow” is actually a trailer of gardening equipment available for use by residents in the area.

“The Community Wheelbarrow group is a volunteer organisation where most individuals are working full time,” says Gina Stewart, the Council’s North Hornby Recreation Coordinator.

“We need people to help with the bookings and delivery of the wheelbarrow. Preferably we’d like you to commit on a weekly basis. The Community Wheelbarrow recognises that your time is valuable and are happy for the day and time of the week to suit you.”

Research for the North Hornby Healthy Lifestyles Project suggested more physical activity and community recreation would help improve local residents’ lifestyles.

The wheelbarrow project, which is also funded by SPARC, grew from that. Users make a koha to help cover things like the cost of petrol. Most of the equipment in the community wheelbarrow has come from donations from Switched On Contracting, Carters and Cyclone Motors.

The project aims to increase community participation in healthy activity and provide recreaction that allows people to get to know each other and learn more about services and other activities in their local community.
