Victorious Crusaders given key to the City of Christchurch

About 5000 fans crowded into Cathedral Square last week to celebrate their rugby team’s victory in the Rebel Sport Super 12 competition. Mayor Garry Moore presented captain Ritchie McCaw with a ceremonial key, representing the freedom of the city. The City Council organised the lunchtime event following the 35-25 win over the Waratahs at Jade Stadium on 28 June. The Mayor talked about how in Dublin in the 1400s being granted the freedom of the city meant you had to invest in weapons and armour and be prepared to defend the city in case of attack. “Today what it really means is we acknowledge the contribution made to the life of the city by the Crusaders and their supporters, near and far, over the reign of the Super 12,” Mr Moore said. “The Crusaders hold a special place in sporting history. Their commitment, dedication, enthusiasm and their shared love of the game of rugby has inspired the people of Christchurch and Canterbury.”
