New signs to help find a park

The first stage of a City Council strategy to make it easier for drivers to find a car park in the central city is almost ready.

When complete, four large electronic signs will hang over busy streets leading into the central city telling drivers which of the nearest City Council car parks have spaces available. The first of these signs is being tested above Durham Street outside the Salvation Army.

Also included in the scheme are about 50 more static signs directing motorists to Council car park buildings.

Don Munro, the Council Manager of Transport and City Streets, says the electronic signage is new to New Zealand but the technology has been well proven overseas.

“We’re the first city in New Zealand to be using the technology successfully implemented overseas,” he says. “It will help maximise the use of existing facilities and tackle the problem of increasing traffic congestion in the central city. The new signs will cer tainly help motorists find parking within the central city.”

The parking search route is bounded by Durham Street, Cambridge Terrace and Lichfield, Madras and Kilmore streets. The second electronic sign is being put up over Lichfield Street. The remaining pair will work over Madras and Kilmore streets.
