Hairy Maclary coming to city

Lynley Dodd, author of the famous series of children’s books starring Hairy Maclary, certainly did not expect her canine creation to become so popular. Now firmly entrenched as an NZ icon, Hairy Maclary and his creator are set to make appearances in Christchurch as part of the TV2 KidsFest.

As a lead up to Hairy Maclary Capers, an interactive production featuring Hairy, Dodd will be reading at libraries throughout the city.

“I haven’t been able to read to children nearly as much as I would’ve liked to lately. It will certainly be exciting to touch base with my core audience again,” she says.

She will give six readings between 17-19 July. See your TV2 KidsFest brochure or check out www.kidsfest.co.nz for times and locations.

Dodd says the idea for her famous character was born from her knowledge of small dogs and their cheekiness.

“It seems that the smaller a dog gets, the cheekier it gets in nature.”

Hairy Maclary Capers runs at Christ’s College Hall from 19-23 July. Again, check the brochure or website for times and ticket details.

Paul Jenden, known as Scarface Claw on stage, says the eight-strong crew can’t wait to get to Christchurch and woo its crowds.

“The show is guaranteed to be a good half hour of rollicking fun,” he says.
