Fendalton celebrates

Fendall Town (known as Fendalton today) will celebrate its 150th anniversary next month.

Coincidentally, the celebrations will fall within Heritage Week.

Many events are being held to mark the occasion.

An inter-denominational service will be held at St Barnabas’ Anglican Church on 14 October and two commemorative bronze plaques, placed on a rock in the church grounds, will be unveiled following the service.

The plaque will acknowledge the large part Walpole and Lucy Fendall played in the establishment of the town.

The large triangular rock will be similar to the material used to build the church, believed to have been taken from the former Garlands Quarry, which was in Port Hills Road-Opawa Road-Glenelg Spur area.

The rock being used for the church ceremony will be taken from Alderson Avenue.

Decra Art, Fulton Hogan Ltd, BD Construction and Welsh Carriers are assisting the project.

A series of lectures will be held at the University of Canterbury covering the history of the district and the 150th theme will be incorporated in a Hip-Hop youth event at Jellie Park on 14 October.

A book, Fendall’s Legacy,by Frieda Looser, will be published by the Canterbury University Press.

The book also will have chapters on Riccarton, Ilam, Bryndwr and Burnside and covers the history from 1850 to last year.
