Cashmere toddler Charis Sanders is already an old hand when it comes to using computers. She loves the computers in libraries — and also Cashflow machines, which she calls "puters."

The two-and-a-half year old was enthralled with the new PCs at the Central Library, when she visited with her mother Coree.

Located in libraries around the city, the new computers operate with a touch screen or mouse and provide a range of stories and information sources.

With 23 different titles, the computers contain great favourites such as the Wiggles, Spot and Dr Seuss plus a selection of educational resources including Eye-witness encyclopedias.

Complete with sound, the computers enable children from as young as two to take part in stories, find new facts and even design a greeting card.

"These PCs replace the previous children’s computers, which had become very outdated," says Leonne Gason, IT support manager for Christchurch City Libraries.

"They successfully combine the latest technology with well-known children’s titles."

The aim of the computers is to encourage learning through play. There are five subject categories:Art and Writing; Stories; Music and Song; Explore and Play; and Find Out. Quizzes, stories and other activities encourage children to explore various topics and learn new skills through participation.

Interactive picture books also provide entertainment for younger users.
