Skate jammin'

Fun future: New skateparks in Jellie Park and St Albans Park are due to be finished next monthTwo new skateparks are being built in the city to cater for young people - and anyone else keen to ride four small wheels.

The skateparks are in Jellie Park and St Albans Park and are due to be finished next month. They will challenge riders and contain street-skating features, says Fendalton-based Christchurch City Leisure community recreation advisor Kate Rathbun.

Riders, families and friends will also be able to gather at SkateJams on Friday and Saturday evenings (7.30 - 10pm) this month and next.

SkateJams are "skateboarding and in-line skating extravaganzas" incorporating a DJ, tribal drumming, fire dancing and a local band.

There are skate demonstrations, skate ramps and opportunities to try boarding or skating for the first time.

They have already been held in city shopping malls and were popular with skateboarders, in-line skaters, parents and younger brothers and sisters attending.

Kate says the events are well-organised and safe.

The programme is:

  • Friday 24 March Hornby Mall
  • Friday 31 March Northlands Mall
  • Friday 7 April Fendalton Mall
  • Saturday 8 April Aranui New World
  • Friday 14 April Barrington Mall
