Big Sumner development

The Council is to spend more than $200,000 redeveloping the area near Cave Rock in Sumner.

The first stage involves improving access from the Esplanade walkway to the beach. The main feature of this stage will be new steps from the Esplanade down to Sumner beach (currently old stone steps) near the On The Beach restaurant.

Consultation with local residents has been held over 18 months and a concept plan has been drawn up for the rest of the development. It allows for closure of the area now improperly used for carparking (next to the restaurant) and development of a raised circular park with views to the sea. This plan is available from Linwood Service Centre.
