More moves to save heritage buildings

The historic Arts Centre of Christchurch provides inspiration for this artist.Money has been put aside in Christchurch City Council’s draft annual plan to start a special Historic Building  Emergency Fund.

The sum of $200,000 will be paid into the fund each year to enable the Council with major grants for the retention of significant-listed buildings under imminent threat of demolition.

If unused in any year, the money will roll over and accumulate.

The annual plan working party considered that the fund is a "frank recognition that our existing heritage funds are not sufficient to meet the demands placed upon them . . . however, rigorous prioritisation will still be necessary".

The working party agreed that the city’s heritage was unique.

"It is just as important to look back as it is to look forward."

This fund is different from the Council’s Heritage Retention Incentive Fund which is designed to provide numerous small grants to owners of listed heritage buildings, places and objects to help them with maintenance, earthquake   strengthening, conservation or restoration.
