Richard ALDERSON (Independent)

Having chosen to live in the Burwood/Pegasus ward, I am passionate about the success and continued growth of the area. I have enjoyed being the Deputy and Chairperson of the Dallington Residents Association for the past 5 years and have been involved in various successful local projects.

Your local Community Board acts as a link between the local Residents and the Council. Due to the reduced number of councillors in these elections the community board will have more input into the local decisions. I would like to be able to provide transparency on most issues that effect the local area.

I am running as part of the Independent Team for the Burwood/Pegasus Ward as we feel that there is no place for party politics in local body. My role would be a 3 year apprenticeship hoping to provide fresh input and a new view on decisions in the coming term.

Glenda BURT (Independent)

I have been an Independent member of the Burwood Pegasus Community Board for 6 years. I believe in safe, caring communities and my interests on the Board reflect this. I have chaired the Funding Assessment Committee that is responsible for the Community Development, and the Sport and Recreation Funds. I am a member of the committee that allocates the Youth Development Fund. I represent the Board on Neighbourhood Support Canterbury, where I am the Secretary Treasurer, and Keep Christchurch Beautiful. A highlight this term has been achieving the funding for the renovation work at the Burwood War Memorial.

I have lived in Burwood for 35 years and enjoy living on the eastern side of the City. My interests include the Horseshoe Lake Residents Association, the upgrading of Horseshoe Lake Reserve, the Burwood Community Watch, Kingslea, the Brighton Gallery Trust and Burwood United St. Kentigerns Church.

Carmen HAMMOND (Independent)

With the last 3 years as a member of the Burwood Pegasus Community Board, I have taken great pride in being involved with the New Brighton Artworks, North New Brighton War Memorial Hall upgrade, Queenspark/Parklands Youth. I have been a committee member of Youth Development Fund, Community Funding Assessment, and founding member of the Sport Recreation fund. Born, bred, educated and still living in the area means I have a true understanding and respect for people who are my community. It is important they receive effective representation, advocacy and consultation. With qualifications in business management, 10 years working with youth, presently employed as a manager of social services; I forward think, make sound decisions and believe in being accountable. People are busy with balancing work, raising families and finding time for recreation. I want to continue to support people by working on issues important to them. Phone 383-1530.

Caroline KELLAWAY (Labour for Christchurch 2021)

I’ve been a member of Burwood-Pegasus Community Board since 1998 and am currently Deputy Chairperson. I have served on the Community and Recreation Funding Committees, I’m currently Chairperson of PEEEP’s Trust, which provides work and training for unemployed people on environmental projects. I’m a mother of two adult daughters with two grandchildren. I’ve lived on the eastern side of Christchurch all my life and have a wide understanding of the activities and issues. My aim is to work for the well-being of all residents. I want to promote healthy, active living through the provision of affordable recreation programmes. Other important interests include my work as a Justice of the Peace, serving on the Christchurch District Court Panel and my role as President of the Woolston Club for the past 11 years. If re-elected I will continue to work hard for the residents of Burwood-Pegasus. caroline.kellaway@xtra.co.nz

Andy LEA (Labour for Christchurch 2021)

I have been a member of the Burwood-Pegasus Community Board for 6 years. I’m an experienced union and community advocate and have enjoyed working with people and representing their views. During the coming term I want to see a comfortable bus terminus built at New Brighton and the completion of beachfront improvements. I have argued strongly that the wastewater pipeline should be at least 3km long in order to guarantee that our beaches remain pollution-free. I will work for the early closure and rehabilitation of the Burwood landfill. We must continue to look after our basic services, especially our roads and footpaths. I’m a strong supporter of the Council’s elderly persons housing and the Summertimes recreation programme. I also support the Council refusal to sell its assets such as the airport, electricity network and water supply system. I’ll continue to argue strongly for the people I represent. andy.lea@clear.net.nz

Tina LOMAX (Labour for Christchurch 2021)

My experience includes a teaching career spanning over 20 years in the Burwood area. I’ve been in my current position as Principal of Kingslea School for six years. I am also Chair of Glenelg Health Camp School.

I have a Bachelor of Education from Canterbury University and I am currently studying towards a post-graduate Diploma in Child Advocacy. I’m a mother of two adult children; both are currently at university. I live adjacent to the Horseshoe Lake reserve. I enjoy the wildlife and regular walks in the reserve and want to preserve this and other wildlife areas for future generations. I’m passionate about developing safer communities and looking at strategies that will reduce youth offending. I believe my teaching experience will assist the board in developing and evaluating such strategies. Because of my long association with the local community I’m confident I’d be a good representative for you. lomax@xtra.co.nz

Don ROWLANDS (Labour for Christchurch 2021)

I am Chairman of the Burwood-Pegasus Community Board and a former City Councillor. I’ve led a successful Community Board, which has achieved a great deal. It now meets in its own rooms in New Brighton. The Parklands Library will open in 2005 and the North New Brighton Community Centre has been upgraded. I’ve been the representative on the Parklands, Dallington and Horseshoe Lake Residents’ Associations and I’ve been appointed to the Aranui Renewal Steering Committee. As a keen environmentalist I’m pleased to see the success of the recycling programme, which I proposed many years ago. I’ve served on the Travis Wetland Trust, campaigned against Estuary pollution from sewage and storm water, and helped found neighbourhood cottages in North New Brighton and Dallington. My wife and I live in Southshore close to where my grandfather settled in 1908. I work part time as a Family Counsellor and Parent Educator. rowlands.don@paradise.net.nz

Peter F SIBBALD (Independent)

Peter Sibbald is a chartered accountant, freelance writer and best selling author. To counter the less exiting aspects of his profession, Peter enjoys skydiving and pretty much anything that gets the adrenaline pumping.

Peter is horrified that every winter our air is foul with pollution choking the citizens and destroying our quality of life. Last summer the beaches of Pegasus Bay were deemed hazardous to health for swimming, and now even the water we drink has been earmarked as soon requiring chemical additives to maintain its quality. All this while the present council continues to spend up large on travel to our 'sister' cities, and there promotes our city as 'fresh each day' and 'clean and green'.

With this in mind Peter decided to stand up and be counted. Protect our quality of life and vote this election.

Mike STEERE (Working for a SAFER Community)

If you wish to see your community become a safer place for all, then I'm the candidate for you. I have lived in the Burwood/Pegasus area my entire life, and I feel a strong sense of attachment to the community and it's people. I have experience in leadership, as the Head Boy at Shirley Boys', I am now keen to explore avenues whereby we can become safer as a community, whether that be on the roads, on the footpaths, or in our own homes. Our ward has many of Christchurch's finest natural environments and outdoor recreational facilities. As a Community Board member, I will do everything within my powers to ensure these resources are protected. WE must be responsible for ensuring that the natural beauty and safety of our community is a priority today, so it can be enjoyed by the community of tomorrow. Together, WE can make a difference.

Dean TE HAE (Labour for Christchurch 2021)

Kia Ora Tatou Katoa. I work in the public health sector promoting healthy life-styles and good nutrition. I serve on a school board, a community trust board and I coach various sports teams. The role of a community board member is to raise the profile of local issues and communicate concerns to the City Council. I would enjoy being part of a team that could make a difference. In particular I will work to involve people of all ages in active recreation as a defence against modern lifestyle diseases. My wife and I have four children and we enjoy playing sports, riding bikes, swimming, eating ice cream and, at times, enjoying the peace and quiet. I support positive parenting programmes and initiatives that strengthen families and their sense of belonging in the community. As a young man I have the energy and enthusiasm to get things done. dtehae@hop.org.nz
