Despite setbacks city still attractive

Although the city continues to be referred to as the Garden City, people worry about the loss of trees and the loss of visible gardens because of high fences being erected.

Notwithstanding some dents to the image, the city continues to present itself as an attraction to visitors and residents.

The approach from Christchurch Airport along Memorial Avenue and Fendalton Road is admirable and the Fendalton-Waimairi Community Board is proud of its community and continually strives, where possible, to add further to the Garden City image.

The Board acknowledges that it is the residents of the community who deserve the credit to a large extent for the presentation of the northwest area of the city.

Many examples typify the dedication of residents and range from the regular mowing of street berms, the raking and collection of leaves, and the care of property gardens.

Much of the work is unrewarded but noted and does so much to maintain pride in the community.

The Fendalton-Waimairi Community Board recently hosted two sessions where recognition was given to more than 100 residents for their pride in providing gardens, which do so much to beautify the community.

The pleasure shown by the award recipients, including a growing number of immigrant families, clearly shows that the ongoing work is a most satisfying process. Another means of assisting the Council in achieving community satisfaction is by the Adopt-A-Park programme. In this way residents can offer to be the unofficial guardians for their neighbourhood reserve.

The Community Board was delighted to receive interest from Merivale residents for their guardianship of the new reserve being prepared between Office Road and Rugby Street.
