Cr Close to open new bridge

Retiring City Councillor David Close will officially open the city’s newest bridge over the River Avon early next month.
The opening will mark the end of stage one of the $16 million Woolston-Burwood Expressway, a joint City Council-Transit NZ project, and embrace the section of from New Brighton Road to Wainoni Road.

Anzac Drive, from Queen Elizabeth 11 to New Brighton Road, is already in operation.

Construction of the bridge was hindered by problems in the past year, such as the discovery of tottara logs beneath the river.

Stage two has begun with stopping access from Birch and Brook Streets and Bexley Road to the expressway.

Property purchases will continue until next year.

A contract for the construction of stage two is expected to be let soon.

Traffic should be using the full expressway by December next year.
