Peter BLAXALL (Independent Citizens)

I have given a lifetime of community service working for children on the board of Cholmondely Childrens Home, caring for the elderly and receiving the Queens Service Order for my services to the elderly and setting up Prison Fellowship throughout New Zealand caring for prisoners, their families and victims of crime.

I have also a special interest in the beauty of Christchurch having established an Inner City Tree Planting Committee when I was Chairman of the Council Parks and Recreation committee. Website; www.peterblaxall.homestead.com

Robin BOOTH (Elect Robin Booth)

I've been a Community Board member for the last six years. With changes in Council size and structure I'm now standing in the Hagley-Ferrymead Ward where I've been a rates payer for years.

While I've also been a City Councillor and CDHB member during this time, I've always found being on the Community Board rewarding because it's allows me to have a more hands on involvement in what's going on locally. This has included deciding the types of trees to be planted in the streets and parks, defining traffic flows and street lighting, enhancing streams, and sponsoring new equipment for the local playgrounds and schools. I'm very proud that the previous Community Board I was on won two nationwide awards last year for Community Board innovation and excellence. I'm 45, married and have earned my living as a builder, author, investor and manufacturer. For more information go to www.robinbooth.com

Rod CAMERON (Independent)

Currently elected member of Hagley-Ferrymead Community Board. For additional details please read candidate profile statement for Councillors in this booklet.

As your independent representative on the Board I have consistently attended all meetings and worked extremely hard on a full-time basis ensuring your views and expectations are fully considered. If re-elected, I will continue to do this. With increased delegations to Community Boards under the new electoral structure it is important that you have experienced people representing you at Board level. Having served one term on the current Board I believe I have gained considerable experience and am willing to continue serving you in a fair, honest, and unbiased manner as your independent member. Community involvement in local body decision making is of prime importance. Your views and opinions do count. Please feel free to phone me on any issues you may be concerned about. Ph 332-3011

Paul FINDLAY (Independent)

Do you care about your community? I know I do! For the last several years I have shown a passion for this community through my continued work and dedication to help the spirit of our community shine. My interest in youth projects like the Diverse Youth Cafe and much loved Linwood Youth Festival Experience have lead me to want to do more for our community. I especially want to represent the youth and young people of this community. I see them as vital to the future of our great city and want to ensure they have a voice realivent to them. This with some hard work and common sense are my main aims.

John FREEMAN (Independent)

Community Board for 12 years. Topping the poll at the last two elections. I have also been an elected member of the Christchurch Drainage Board and the North Canterbury Catchment Board. I have an M.A. degree. I represent the Board with the Estuary Association and the Summit Road Society. I am a member of the Sumner Residents' Association, All Saints Church, Sumner-Redcliffs Historic Society, and the RSA. I am married with three grown up sons. I am standing as an independent. I am keen on swimming, body surfing, gardening, dancing and tramping. My local body priorities centre round community health and safety. I would like a new ward local swimming pool; A Port Hills Regional Park to protect that precious recreational area; Safer cycleways and footpaths; Sumner pier to be lengthened particularly for the disabled; More green space for Hagley.

Angela GORTON (Labour for Christchurch 2021)

As a resident in the Bromley-Linwood area and a founding member of the Bromley Residents’ Association, I have a strong sense of pride in the area’s history and its cultural diversity. A retired professional singer, a Founder-Trustee of the Dame Malvina Major Foundation and Canterbury Opera (of which I was General Manager for 10 years) I have a long commitment to the arts, especially to supporting young talented artists. I passionately believe that all people should have the opportunity to participate in and appreciate all forms of creative activity. I am committed to ensuring that new building development is in keeping with the character of the area. I am Sponsorship Manager for the Christchurch City Choir and involved in St Anne’s Catholic church in Woolston. I look forward to working as part of the Community Board team to implement community development projects that will benefit us all. graeme.angela.gorton@xtra.co.nz

Wayne HAWKER (Independent)

I have shown dedication to the needs of the people in our community being involved with several local community groups for the last 11 years. I hold true to my belief I still have more to offer our community. I have an insight into some of the needs of our community as a whole. My aim when elected is to work with you the residents as part of a team to bring about new ideas for a vibrant and exciting community we can all be proud to call our own. A strong and energetic community further enhances the value of living in Christchurch. Together we can make a difference and I welcome your support.

Yani JOHANSON (Labour for Christchurch 2021)

At 29 years of age, it’s been my privilege to represent you as one of the youngest elected members in Christchurch.  I offer you a youthful and energetic local candidate who is a keen crusader for the community. During my first term on the Board, I’ve worked hard to fulfil my campaign promises of being accountable and working together to achieve positive results. I’ve been proactive in taking leadership roles as chair of the Board’s Environment and Traffic Sub-Committee, Keep Christchurch Beautiful and the Inner City West Neighbourhood Association. I’ve spoken out against the increases in user charges for bus fares, rubbish bags, and city housing rents for those who can least afford them.  My commitment to you is to continue fighting hard to ensure that neighbourhood groups and local people always have an opportunity to be informed and involved in decisions that affect them. johanson@free.net.nz (377 2584)

Brenda LOWE-JOHNSON (Labour for Christchurch 2021)

Thirty years of work in the community has prepared me for the responsibilities of a community board member. My voluntary work has ranged from fundraising for a school swimming pool to providing meals for the elderly, and teaching budgeting and life skills at the prison. During ten years of employment with a major church-based social services agency, I pioneered humane but realistic programmes for low-income people to meet their urgent needs and also to help them towards independence. I serve as a Justice of the Peace, a trustee of Canterbury Community Trust, a member of the Courts Advisory Board and the Otautahi Runaka. I’m a mother and grandmother, and give my husband support in his work for a Pacific Island trust. I’m enthusiastic about using my experience to help the Community Board in its key role of building a strong, safe and healthy community. lowejohnson@hotmail.com

Karla OSMERS (Christchurch 2021)

I have been secretary of Heathcote Valley Community Association for 3 years and a vestry member and treasurer of the Heathcote/Mt Pleasant Anglican Church for 3 years. I have been actively involved in volunteer work, including the PTA, School Board of Trustees and youth group. I have a B.A. in Psychology and experience in office administration and technology. As a mother of a teenager and five year-old, I support initiatives that bring both young and old people together, fostering a sense of community. I see educational and recreational programmes as an important part of our social development. We need parks and other spaces for time out from our busy lives. As a member of the Community Board, I would like to involve people in the initial planning process instead of having them react with complaints about developments they have not been informed of. karla_nz@ihug.co.nz

Brendan SMITH (Independent)

Dr Smith has been a member of the Hagley/Ferrymead Community Board for 3 years. He is a general practitioner, and has worked in the Eastgate and Ferrymead areas for seven and a half years. Brendan is a former primary school teacher who returned to study medicine. He has been a doctor for 15 years. Brendan also holds a masters degree in Business Administration.

Born in Christchurch, Brendan firmly believes in the future of Christchurch as a place for families. He works hard to support the sensible management of current problems, development, and the benefits of living in Christchurch for ALL its residents.

Bob TODD (Labour for Christchurch 2021)

I was elected to the Hagley-Ferrymead community board in 1995 and have had the privilege of chairing the board for the past six years. I’m married with three sons, one of whom has achieved fame as a sportsman. My family, including my grandchildren, play a large part in my life. I know the Linwood-Woolston district well because of my long residence there and I’ve developed extensive knowledge of Ferrymead, Sumner and the hill areas. A major priority is to build a new bridge at Ferrymead to reduce traffic congestion. Presently I’m also Chairperson of the Community Trust, Honorary Vice President of Sumner Surf Life Saving Club, secretary of Unimed Medical Society and a Justice of the Peace. In 1988 I received the O.B.E. for community services. I’m grateful for the opportunity to have served you and with your support look forward to doing so in the future. bob.todd@ccc.govt.nz
