Transfer stations' fleeting closure

A new method of transporting rubbish will be introduced with the opening of the new regional landfill in May.

To accommodate this new system construction work is needed at the city refuse stations.

At present rubbish is compacted directly onto the trucks. The new system will see rubbish compacted into closed containers which will then be put on trucks for transport to the new landfill. The new method increases the amount of waste carried per trip, so reducing the number of truck journeys.

The refit to enable the loading of compacted material into the containers requires the closure of each station for two days. This will take place on week days. Work at Styx Mill refuse station has just been completed. Closures will occur at Metro Place refuse station in early April and at Parkhouse Road refuse station in May.

For confirmed station closure dates closer to the time, phone the Council's info-line 941 6875 or visit www.ccc.govt.nz/Waste/RefuseStations
