All-time top tennis stars shine at Westpac Centre
Two of the world's greatest-ever tennis players recently graced the specially laid court at the Council's Westpac Centre.
Martina Navratilova (shown above) and her opponent Monica Seles have between them accumulated 67 Grand Slam tournament titles. The players' class was evident as they battled through three enthralling sets.
Navratilova had arrived in Christchurch direct from the Australian Open, while it was Seles' first event following an injury break of almost 18 months. Navratilova won the exhibition, which was sponsored and supported by the City Council and ASB Bank, 4-6, 6-2, 6-4.
The crowd of 3000 was treated to a full night of tennis entertainment with Crusaders Chris Jack and Casey Laulala playing in the curtain-raiser and Canterbury's favourite son, Andrew Mehrtens, teamed up with Navratilova to play a doubles match against Seles and Canterbury tennis player Alistair Hunt.
Navratilova and Seles also attended a luncheon, with the proceeds going to Unicef for its tsunami fund.
