Garden for blind given a home
A scented garden for the blind will be permanently housed in the beautiful grounds of the Avice Hill Art and Craft Centre, at 395 Memorial Avenue in Fendalton (between Roydvale Ave and Russley Rd).
The scented garden features a textured map of New Zealand made from plants, a water feature creating a silver fern, hanging baskets and other textured designs made up of plants, stones, shells and driftwood. Birdsong and wind chimes complete the sensory experience.
Ken Howat, the Council's Community and Recreation Advisor, says "By adding the scented garden we've created a destination that is very worthwhile to the community." Avice Hill is a special place, epitomising community goodwill. The centre was donated to the city in 1988 by the late Avice Hill, "the lavender lady", who actively supported the Ferrymead Trust, Friends of the Museum, the Canterbury Potters' Association, and was a life member of the Canterbury Horticultural Society. She was recognised as an authority on herbs and she had a variety of lavender named after her.
The craft centre and new scented garden designed especially for the blind will reflect Avice Hill's dream of it being a special place for people to relax, enjoy magnificent surroundings and take part in community programmes.
