Rugby stars back reading push

The Reading Crusade is on again: Crusaders player Dave Hewett helps Shayde Turner from Richmond Primary School and Francesca Hlavac from St Albans School cut a cake, while the Government's Associate Education Minister David Benson-Pope looks on.

Crusaders Dave Hewett, Sam Broomhall, Casey Laulala and Corey Flynn are among the local rugby stars supporting this year's Reading Crusade.

The Christchurch City Libraries scheme is in partnership with the local Rebel Sport Super 12 team. Its aim is to encourage more children - especially boys - to make reading a life-long habit. Based on the success of the first attempt in 2003, it is expected to attract up to 20,000 children.

The Reading Crusade is open to primary and intermediate school children in the Crusaders' franchise area. To join, children simply need to read eight fiction or non-fiction books and send an entry form to Christchurch City Libraries by 15 April.

Crusaders and All Blacks prop Dave Hewett says he and his wife read every night to their three young children. Being an enthusiastic reader is a great asset, Hewitt says, "and you need to start when you're young."

"For me the Reading Crusade has highlighted that there's a problem with boys not reading and how we (the Crusaders) can make a difference as role models for kids who love sport and the outdoors."Children who take part could win prizes, including several chances to spend time with the team as the Crusader for a Day. Every child will receive a Reading Crusade certificate, printed with the players' signatures. The prizegiving will be held at Jade Stadium on 4 May.

As part of a new player development programme, Crusaders players also will be visiting schools to help children improve their reading skills. The first Reading Crusade drew 7000 entries and won a 3M Innovation Award for Reading Literacy. More information and an on-line entry form are on the web at www.library.christchurch.org.nz/ReadingCrusade. Entry forms are also be available from all Christchurch City Libraries.
