Cultural Precinct - explore it

A new identity in the heart of the central city - the Cultural Precinct - has been launched to link 10 key venues and attractions between Christchurch Cathedral and the Botanic Gardens.

A true cohesive precinct with a strong historical background, the grouping also includes the Visitor Centre, Tramway, Our City O-Tautahi, the Provincial Council Buildings, Centre of Contemporary Art (CoCA), Christchurch Art Gallery Te Puna o Waiwhetu, the Arts Centre, the Museum and Christ's College.

The Cultural Precinct has strong heritage values and examples of architectural excellence, both new and old. Christchurch's architecture gives the city a special character and the vision of the early settlers lives on in the Cultural Precinct.

There is just a short tram ride or walk between each venue. To encourage residents to enjoy the area, the Tramway is offering a $12.50 Locals Pass, allowing use of the trams for a year.

Promoting the precinct will be good for the city and its visitors, says Arts Centre director Tony Paine. "It makes it so easy for people to find their way around the collection of attractions, which in the most part have no entrance fee".

The Cultural Precinct is complemented by a range of dining, shopping, hotels, open spaces and transport. A Cultural Precinct booklet is now available from all precinct venues and on-line at www.culturalprecinct.co.nz It profiles the partners and includes a What's On guide to the events and activities taking place in the precinct until May.
